Smoothie bar funding for Lambeth Schools

In London, Lambeth Innovation Fund have awarded Xing Ed support funding for the first 4 schools or colleges to sign up for a student run smoothie bar. The schools or colleges will have over 80% of the set-up costs covered by the Innovation Fund.

Every bar that Xing Ed has helped to set-up has made profit from its first set of stock and continue to do so. We’re really excited to be working in Richard’s home patch and want to see how the Lambeth students fair against the ever entrepreneurial Yorkshire student bars.

The funding came about following a meeting with Chuka Umunna MP*, Shadow Business Secretary and MP for Streatham (Richard Strudwick’s home patch) at the end of last academic year. Mr Umunna is a great supporter of youth enterprise and put Xing Ed in touch with a local support programme, the Lambeth Innovation Fund.

Xing Ed pitched to Lambeth Innovation Fund for match funding for schools and colleges in Lambeth. We were joined on the pitch by Paul Chambers, Director of Learning, from Lambeth College who are very keen to develop the entrepreneurial behaviour of their Level 3 learners.

Xing will train all the students and staff at the successful schools. We’ll provide set up equipment and stock. And be on hand to help you through any teething problems. We have 6 bars already trading in schools, meaning we have a clear and simple process for everyone to follow. The aim is to equip students with the problem solving, entrepreneurial skills to improve their chances of getting a job or growing a successful business. And everyone eats more fruit in the process.

As part of the deal, successful schools will ‘give back’ a portion of the profits. This could be to the local community, supporting other schools etc. We’re open to ideas.
