York Business Week and GEW

This week we launched 2 pop-up school smoothie bars in York and 1 permanent college bar in North Hertfordshire. That’s because this week is York Business Week and Global Entrepreneurship Week. We’re very proud to be supporting both.

We’ve trained students from each school and college to make smoothies. But they’ve also learnt how to market their business and manage the finances. All with the aim of making a profit from improving the health of their fellow students. A ‘healthy profit’.

To make the bar a success, the students had to overcome real problems including picking a location, opening hours, the right marketing message, staffing levels and delegating job roles. The biggest business challenge is how to serve lots of people a made-to-order product in a short space of time – break time.

The 6 young businessmen and women in year 12 (pictured) at Archbishop Holgates School, York, got off to a flyer. They sold 53 smoothies during the 15 minute break time. The took £168 in their first full day trading. Well done also to the 10 year 10s at Huntington School in York. They made £112 today. The queues spoke for themselves.

During one training day at Huntington School, the students asked if they could stay in and work over their lunch. Nobody saw that one coming.

Down south, North Hertfordshire College launched their bar today. The college is well known for it’s enterprising attitude to the education. They’ve been a pleasure to work with. You can follow their progress on their twitter feed.

*For the rest of the week. *

On Tuesday, Phil’s running an enterprise day in Gateshead for GEW.

Then it’s back to Hull on Wednesday where we’re training up students to launch the Winifred Holtby School bar, thanks to support from the Youth Enterprise Bank. On Thursday and Friday Phil is speaking at school events in Hull as well as judging the Badger’s Set activity with Ruth Badger from The Apprentice.

Our aim, within that of York Business Week and GEW, is to provide a link between business and education. We create real world problems and give young people the guidance and responsibility to solve them together – to improve their employability and health.
